Disappointment as Ukrainian Rugby Trip to Keighley Postponed Due to Issues at the Ukraine/Polish Border
Keighley Cougars and Raiseprint are deeply disappointed to announce that the much-anticipated visit from a group of young Ukrainian rugby players has been postponed due to unforeseen administrative issues at the border.
The group of children had travelled for seven hours overnight by train from Kyiv and reached the Polish border early this morning, where they were unfortunately unable to continue their journey to Keighley. As a result of war-time legislation, an additional certification was required for the accompanying adult to be permitted to leave Ukraine. Despite best efforts, including contacting senior Ukrainian political officials, the war-time requirements meant securing the additional certification would take a number of days.
Kaue Garcia, Managing Director of Keighley Cougars, expressed his sadness at the situation:
“We feel extremely disappointed with the news we received this morning. The club and the whole community of Keighley were ready to welcome the group and give them the best week possible. Sadly, this is one of those situations beyond our control — but we are determined to rearrange the trip for the spring.”
The visit was part of a joint initiative between Keighley Cougars and Raiseprint, aimed at providing the Ukrainian youngsters — all passionate about rugby — with an opportunity to train, meet players, and experience the warmth of the Keighley rugby community.
The club would like to extend special thanks to Raiseprint, our main sponsors, for their continued support, and in particular to Steve and Louise Bell, whose generosity made the trip possible.
We would like to thank RL Commercial for donating tickets for the group to attend the Ashes match, and the RFL who had arranged for the children to meet their hero Nathan Cleary prior to the game.
Thanks also to the Mercure Hotel, and all the individuals and local businesses who prepared goodie bags and gifts for the children’s arrival.
While today’s outcome is disappointing, the Cougars remain committed to making the trip happen in spring — when the children will not only enjoy a full week of activities but also have the chance to see the Cougars in action.
